Bug ID: 360972
Summary: Opening the edit brush window resulted in covering the
default Apple Toolbar at the top of screen and has no
exit button to close the window.
Product: krita
Version: unspecified
Platform: Compiled Sources
URL: Loading Image...
OS: OS X
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: krita-bugs-***@kde.org
Reporter: ***@gmail.com

After clicking the Edit Brush Settings button, the edit brush Window appeared
Oversized (as in near full screen) and Covered the default Apple Toolbar at the
top of screen and has no exit button to close the window. Also unable to be
resized by clicking and dragging the sides.

In image provided, you will see there is no normal apple menu/tool bar at the
top of screen due to being covered by the edit brush settings window.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.create new image
2.click the Edit Brush Settings Icon
3.Unable to move, resize, or exit window

Actual Results:
The edit brush settings window opened near full screen size and covered the top
default OSX toolbar, leaving no GUI means of closing the window. Have to hotkey
quit (cmd+q) to activate prompt to save image or not, which then exits the
window. Hitting cancel leaves the window closed.

Expected Results:
Stayed a relatively adequate size, less than half the screen. Be able to be
closed, resized, and moved.

Mac 10.10.5
Krita 3.0 Alpha

Rated normal due to work around, otherwise major due to user experience being
ruined.

Hi,

The brush editor popup is too big and complex, that's a known issue. You can
right-click on the editor to detach it, which should help here. Redesigning the
brush editor is something that's being discussed, but we haven't got a good
design yet.

I was testing some of the G'MIC filters when I bumped into this bug. It has a
work around (cmd+Q and then hit cancel), but definitely something not appeasing
for OSX users. And your work around of right click and selecting detach does
not work. I get into the bug, right click, select detach, and it appears
nothing happens. This is because the top bar that appears when detached, is
still out of the user's visible and intractable space After selecting detach, I
attempt to drag the box away from the top, but to no avail. (Can only click and
drag is I see the bar, which I do not)

All OSX applications never go above or cover up the top menu bar. The only time
it should ever disappear is when in full screen mode, but then the user should
be able to put their mouse at the top of screen and it reappears. In this case
the box covers it and makes it inaccessible entirely, as well as unmovable,
because I suspect the top of this box is what you click to drag and move it
around, which is why the detach does not work, as far as I know. If I am
incorrect and you can click anywhere (that does not invoke an action, ie.
hitting a button) in the box to drag it, then that does not work in OSX either.

Also, I am uncertain if this may simply be a "smaller screen" problem, I think
it would be a problem in all systems. My laptop has a 13.3-inch (2560 x 1600)
screen. Despite actual size, I'm pretty sure that's either an average or above
average screen resolution. I also am more certain it is not limited to smaller
screen sizes, because the brush editor popup appears up there no matter the
location of the actual main program window. And that means that even if marked
as attached to toolbar, its not acting like expected when stated to be attached
to the toolbar. By this I mean, I would expect the popup to appear underneath
the krita toolbar, but instead it appears statically at the top. This is most
likely an error simply in when it is called to appear, it is not taking into
account the relative location of the tool bar, and also when stated to be
detached I doubt it takes into consideration the location of the system menu
bar.

If I have free time in summer, I will attempt to handle this bug, since it is
mac specific. My studies end and I get free time starting at May 8th. The Krita
tasks will begin then. ;)

Your laptop has a high res screen, but Apple's retina stuff artificially scales
it down, by default to 1280x800 pixels, which is not all that much.

I saw another Japanese user(MacOSX) suffering from this issue, and I too think
it really is annoying when using Krita fullscreen on OSX - Brush Editor taking
up the whole space and it won't go, unless using cmd+q method in the
description, or Command+Tab and switching to another application.

(Due to 361766, it's not possible to use "detach" brush editor now.)

i have made the brush editor a bit smaller vertically, but I am not sure if it
will be small enough still. We need to figure out the maximum window size we
need to support. If it needs to be much smaller than it currently is, we will
probably need to do a pretty major design change to get it smaller.

it will be a trade-off of scrolling more to see everything, but it will be more
manageable for smaller monitors.

macbook screen capture

This is 3.1 beta brush editor displayed in macbook air11(entire screen
captured)...still big for the screen I think.
If "detach" brush editor option would be back, I think that would be an
acceptable workaround.

(I noticed ESC can close the editor - in that sense it's better than before.)

The master branch has some UI updates to the brush editor. The width is quite a
bit smaller in it as the left area and scratchpad can be toggled on or off.
When the master branch gets pushed out, we can determine if it is small enough,
or what the next steps are to improve it.

I am going to close this out. We have made a lot of changes in Krita 4.0 and
the brush editor is quite a bit smaller now. Some of the areas are collapsible
which can help save space. If there are additional issues, we can always open
another ticket up and go from there.
